What is a Knee Replacement?

A knee replacement is a surgical procedure where damaged parts of the knee joint are replaced with artificial components to relieve pain and improve function.

There are two main types of knee replacement surgery:

Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

A total knee replacement involves replacing the entire knee joint with an artificial implant. This is typically recommended when arthritis affects multiple parts of the joint.

Partial Knee Replacement (PKR)

A partial knee replacement replaces only the damaged part of the knee joint while preserving healthy bone and cartilage. Recovery may be slightly faster, but rehabilitation is still essential.

Both procedures aim to reduce pain and restore mobility, but physiotherapy is critical for regaining strength and movement afterwards.

Why is Physiotherapy Essential After a Knee Replacement?

Pain and swelling are common after knee replacement and can limit early movement. Our physiotherapists provide various hands on and hands off treatments and practical advice to help reduce swelling and improve comfort while the knee heals.

Pain and Swelling

The muscles around the knee often become weak after surgery, affecting stability and walking. Our physiotherapists create progressive strengthening programmes to rebuild muscle support around the joint.

Muscle Weakness

Many patients initially struggle to fully bend or straighten the knee after surgery. We use targeted mobility exercises and guided rehabilitation to gradually restore range of motion and prevent stiffness.

Reduced Knee Movement

Walking may feel slow, stiff, or unstable during the early stages of recovery. We provide gait training and functional exercises to help you walk more comfortably and safely.

Difficulty Walking

The muscles around the knee often become weak after surgery, affecting stability and walking. Our physiotherapists create progressive strengthening programmes to rebuild muscle support around the joint.
